Bareilly: In a grand celebration of International Yoga Day 2024, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University (MJPRU) in Bareilly organized a unique event called “Jhumka Yoga” at the iconic Jhumka Chauraha in the heart of the city. The event saw the convergence of yoga, dance and the rich cultural heritage of Bareilly, also known as “Nath Nagri”. The theme of this year’s International Yoga Day was “Women Empowerment” and the Jhumka Yoga event aptly embodied this spirit.

The highlight of the event was the introduction of “Jhumka Yoga”, a unique yoga exercise that drew inspiration from the iconic Jhumka, a signature jewelry piece that has become synonymous with Bareilly’s identity. Led by accomplished yoga practitioners Kanishka and Jyoti, the Jhumka Yoga session combined traditional asanas with graceful movements that mirrored the swinging motion of the Jhumka.

Adding to the cultural vibrancy of the event, the students of the University Cultural Centre presented a mesmerizing Yoga dance performance that seamlessly blended the ancient practice of Shiv Yoga with the vibrant dance forms of Bareilly. Pratibha and Isha, the talented artistes, mesmerized the audience with their synchronized movements and elegant depiction of the synergy between Indian culture, Shiv Yoga and Nath Nagri heritage.

The event was also graced by the presence of Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. K. P. Singh, the chief guest, in his address emphasised the significance of the event and said, “The Jhumka Yoga Festival is a testimony to our university’s commitment to preserve the rich cultural heritage of Bareilly, as well as promote women’s empowerment through the ancient practice of yoga. This event is a true embodiment of a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. Yoga helps a human being to look within and purify his soul. Today, the whole world is understanding the power of yoga and the importance of India.

The Jhumka Yoga event was a grand success, with students, teachers and members of the Bareilly community participating enthusiastically. The event not only highlighted the university’s dedication to promoting cultural awareness, but also demonstrated the institution’s unwavering commitment to using yoga to empower women and strengthen the entire community.
